Boycott Ingman Marine

Gary Ingman is owner and President of Ingman Marine, a boat dealership in Sarasota, Placida and Port Charlotte, Florida. Gary Ingman is also owner of the Professional Tarpon Tournament Series (PTTS).  This made-for-TV fishing tournament series is considered highly unethical and unsportsmanlike by Save the Tarpon, Inc and our 17,000 supporters world-wide.

It is because of this, Save the Tarpon asks for your support in boycotting the services and products offered by Ingman Marine.

The PTTS is owned and operated by the Tarpon Anglers Club, a for profit LLC registered in the State of Florida.  Here are the current State records available on sunbiz.org.

Worried about where to get your Yamaha serviced?  Well, Yamaha is also on our boycott list as they are a major sponsor of the PTTS.  However, for local outboard service try The Boat House on Placida Road or Abels Marine on Gasparilla Road.

Another helpful tactic would be to contact Grady-White Boats (Ingman Marine is an exclusive dealer of this boat manufacturer) and let them know you will not support Ingman Marine or their products because of their destructive attitude towards the Boca Grande Tarpon fishery and local environment.  Their contact information is as follows:

Grady-White Boats Inc 5121 Martin Luther King Jr Hwy, Greenville, NC 27834 (252) 752-2111 ‎ gradywhite.com

Or email them at custserv@gradywhite.com .

Eddie Smith, Jr., CEO of Grady-White Boats has this posted on the company’s website:

“Dedication to Fisheries Resources and Coastal Environment
Eddie Smith has led Grady-White to be recognized as the boating industry’s leader in recreational fishing and coastal environment issues. Eddie himself has been recognized for lifetime achievement by the American Sportfishing Association, and has also been honored by the International Game Fish Association and many others for his commitment. Many of the managers and other employees at Grady-White are similarly dedicated to the long-term health of fisheries and coastal areas. A Grady-White boat is truly a symbol of dedication to the best kind of future for our children, our fisheries and our waterways.”

If you’ve noticed, Gary Ingman has always been very quiet about his ownership of the PTTS. It is why you will rarely see any mention of the PTTS at any of his dealerships. It is why you do not see Ingman Marine listed as a “sponsor” on the marketing materials. It is why he hides behind his talking figure head, Joe Mercurio.

We all need to ask ourselves these very important questions…

What would happen to Boca Grande and the surrounding communities if the tarpon ceased to visit Boca Grande Pass?

Additionally, what kind of damage to the local economy is already being realized because of the disrespectful and aggressive “pack” of tournament boats that overwhelm Boca Grande Pass and the local waterways during the months of May and June?

This region of Florida was developed over 100 years ago by the anglers and tourists who traveled here to fight a mighty Silver King with a local fishing guide. These fishing guides opened the world’s eyes to sportfishing for the first time. The sad part is, this incredible natural resource, still so vital to the local economy, is at risk of being destroyed by this recent phenomena of NASCAR bumper boats.

This “pack” of PTTS participants are effectively preventing all other anglers from enjoying equal and safe access to the tarpon fishery of Boca Grande Pass. This same “pack” aggression is also seen in the methods in which these PTTS participants relentlessly pursue the tarpon–to the point where many experienced anglers will tell you–the fish are “fleeing.”

But one of the most important things to consider: The way Gary Ingman’s tournament is run–how it is structured to provide the most exciting TV experience for the viewer (aka how to get the best ratings aka how to make the most profits)– is by essentially culling large breeding females right before they head off to spawn. This is done by allowing the contestants to weigh only one fish rather than basing the win on the number of released fish–a format which is practiced by virtually every conservation-minded sport fishing tournament in the world. So when Lucky Joe goes on and on with his monologue about “only 81 fish are weighed each year,” it is far more important to remember these 81 fish are 45-55 years old and the largest of the females filled with 12 million eggs just prior to spawn.

Please, BOYCOTT INGMAN MARINE. Tell your friends, tell those who visit, tell Gary Ingman. There is too much at stake here–even for those who wonder why this cause is so important to us. It is not just about tarpon fishing. It is about the welfare of an entire community. Thank you for your support!

Gary Ingman, I am totally against your organization and its goals in Boca Grande Pass. I have seen it first hand on many occasions and it breaks my heart. It reminds me of a stock car race, where instead of cars being destroyed in mass chaos, its tarpon instead. Meanwhile, everyone is swarming around partying and having no clue whats going on.
